It’s Just a Small Dose? Why That Mindset Might Be Hurting Your Health

🚫 “It’s Just a Small Dose” – Why That Mindset Might Be Hurting Us More Than We Think

(Estimated Read Time: 10–12 minutes)

“It’s Just a Small Dose” – But Is It?

You may have been told, “it’s just a small dose”—but when it comes to what’s going into and onto your body every day, that small dose might not be so harmless.

Have you ever asked—or been asked—this question?

“If it’s considered safe in small doses… why avoid it completely?”

It’s a valid question. And lately, I’ve heard it a lot.

As someone passionate about holistic health, I’ve even received pushback from friends or followers after questioning a popular brand for using ingredients that are labeled as “safe in small amounts.”

But here’s the thing: just because something is approved today doesn’t mean it’s safe forever.

Let’s take a look at history for a minute:

  • ✖️ Formaldehyde

  • ✖️ Parabens

  • ✖️ Lead-based cosmetics

All of these were once considered safe… until they weren’t.

So my response to that popular question is this:

If there’s research showing potential harm—especially with long-term use—and cleaner options are available… why wouldn’t we make the switch?

This isn’t about perfection or panic.
It’s about faithful, informed stewardship.

Why “Just a Small Dose” Might Be More Dangerous Than You Think

Let’s use Phenoxyethanol as an example.

It’s a synthetic preservative found in all kinds of “clean” and mainstream products. Moisturizers, foundations, baby wipes, toothpaste, sunscreen, deodorant—the list goes on.

While one product might contain a “small amount,” most women aren’t using just one product.

Let’s say you use:

  • A morning cleanser and moisturizer

  • Foundation and mascara

  • Lip gloss or balm

  • Deodorant and sunscreen

  • Shampoo and conditioner

  • Lotion before bed

That’s 10–12 products daily, every day.

Each one adding a little more to your toxic load.

Here’s what makes that concerning:
Phenoxyethanol is made from phenol (a corrosive compound) and ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen). Studies link it to:

  • Skin irritation

  • Immune suppression

  • Neurological effects in infants and those with sensitivities

And yet, many products claim it’s “safe in small doses.”

But what does that really mean when you’re layering it, day after day, on your skin—the body’s largest organ?

When Small Doses Stack Up: Daily Exposure Adds Up Fast

Let me be clear: this post isn’t about fear-mongering. I’m not here to make you anxious or ashamed.

This is about awareness.

I want to empower you to read your labels—not just the front of the bottle, but the fine print on the back. Don’t just trust a brand’s mission or marketing.

Because you deserve better.
Your family deserves better.
And brands need to know we’re expecting better.

As Christian women striving to steward our bodies well, let’s not be passive consumers.
Let’s be prayerful, proactive caretakers of the temples God has given us.

Remember 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV):

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

This is why I do what I do.
Why I take the time to research.
Why I talk about ingredients.
Why I share safer swaps.

Because I want to love and serve my community through truth and transformation—not just transactions.
